Why do places have names?
Australia has over 240,000 place names! Every creek, cave, town, street and dry desert waterhole has to have a name.
Discussion: Why do all these places have names?
Go to Google Maps and have a look around at different place names.
What can be named on a map besides for roads and towns?
Where do place names come from?
They may be named after natural features, of indigenous origin, after an important event or an important person.
Sort these place names under the headings and add any you have found on a map. (If only part of the padlet is displayed, go to padlet.com/wall/placenames)
